“Lazy summer days”, is a phrase that once had a lot of relevance with the mention of Summer. Not so much any more in today”s urban life.
Fortunately, there are still some places in the world that enjoy a siesta every single day. Like the birth place of Aphrodite, Cyprus.
Tucked away in the Eastern Mediterranean, is the Republic of Cyprus, a small, independent island-country. How small? It takes just 2 hours to drive from its east coast to the west coast.
Though small, it”s a treasure trove for a holiday traveler. With ruins from ancient Greece to exotic nightlife, beautiful beaches to its rich culture and cuisine – it”s an unparalleled experience.
Art, music and literature are considered heritage, and are all around you as you walk through the streets of Kyrenia and Nicosia, the latter being the capital city of Cyprus.
Beautiful mosaic arts from the Byzantine era are found abundantly especially in the Greek Orthodox Churches.
The only white sand beach in Cyprus, Agia Napa is the place to get some relaxation. Just laze on the beach, enjoy the view or snorkel in the crystal clear waters. You can even go scuba diving, sailing or jet skiing if you’re looking for some adrenaline rush
For those of you planning a winter trip here, the slopes of Mount Troodos are covered in snow between November and February, and are ideal for skiing and snow sports
Be sure to visit Petra Tou Romiou at Paphos, where, according to legend, the Greek Goddess of Love, Aphrodite, is said to have emerged from the waters of the Mediterranean. Not too far from there is the Baths of Aphrodite – where the goddess bathed in the waters of a mineral rich pool of water.
If you have to appease the party animal in you, Cyprus offers great nightlife options. A favorite among international party goers, with numerous pubs and clubs, the nightlife of Cyprus is one among the top. Club Emporium and Black & White at Agia Napa and Basement at Limassol are a few of the numerous happening clubs in Cyprus.
Restaurants serve mouth watering local dishes such as Kleftiko (oven baked lamb), Yalanci Dolma – a vegetarian dish made of vine leaves stuffed with rice, onions and tomatoes, and the ever favorite Sish Kebab.
While in Cyprus, you must try grilled Halloumi, a kind of cheese made from a mixture of goat and sheep milk.
Lokoumia is a traditional sweet made from chopped dates, hazelnuts and other dry fruits and is a delicacy that is a must for anyone with a sweet tooth.
Cypriot wines are vastly popular around the world, with Commandaria wine being the most famous. Local wines have a distinctive sweet taste, and are preferred over imported wines.
You’ll love them so much that you are sure to miss them when you leave Cyprus. So make sure to pack a few to take home.
Shopping is not something that would be a prime tourist activity in Cyprus. However, the presence of various small markets in places like Larnaca and Nicosia, offer its visitors artistic works like pottery, woven bamboo (called sestas) and other such handicrafts, to take back home as souvenirs.
